Claire and Sam Adels

I grew up in Philadelphia, PA and have lived in big cities my entire life until now. I have always enjoyed nature and outdoor recreation, such as hiking and camping in wild areas, and I am especially fond of national parks. Seeking out, exploring, and enjoying green space has remained a constant trend in my life. I am interested in humans relationship to nature as it evolves across time and sharing my passion for nature with others gives me great joy. I attained a Masters in Environmental Education at New York University which brought me to settle in Brooklyn, NY. I enjoyed life as an environmental educator, working for various non-profits and museums, before joining the National Park Service in New York City, where I spent 3 years as a park ranger. I then became an environmental educator at New York University’s Wallerstein Collaborative for Urban Environmental Education working with urban youth and introducing them to ecology and the nature in the city. Finally, Nature Deficit Disorder (lack of nature) caught up with me, and living in the most densely populated and developed city in the nation no longer felt right. Me and my wife left the city for farm life, and have since become the resident stewards of the Good Life Center in Harborside, Maine. We kept a small garden in our previous residences, but living on a homestead provides a new and exciting opportunity for us to learn and grow. My wife Claire was born in Bangor, and spent many summers working on an organic farm. Farm life is newer to me, but I am diving right in. We are trying to live the example that Helen and Scott Nearing set with their lives and carry their legacy forward by living simply, gardening, and welcoming visitors to their homestead. I am a transplant, and like a seedling, we are together putting down roots in order to grow.
